"We just received 50 new seasonal items. I want to list them online quickly, but writing the product descriptions for each one takes forever..."
In retail and e-commerce, I often hear this struggle about writing large volumes of product copy. Even when you have the basic specifications like "size" and "material," transforming those dry facts into engaging text that makes customers want to buy is an incredibly tedious process.
AI can help carry the heavy lifting of this copywriting work.
From Basic Specs to Engaging Copy
The process I use is very simple. I simply bullet-point the raw product specifications and hand them to the AI.
"Draft an engaging product description for our e-commerce store (Shopify/Rakuten) based on the following specs. Please turn the product features into compelling 'reasons to buy' for the customer." - Product: 100% Linen Summer Cardigan - Features: Breathable, wrinkle-resistant finish, machine-washable at home - Target: Working women in their 30s-40s, as a layer against strong office AC
By inputting this, the AI can draft engaging product copy that incorporates concrete usage scenarios, like "staying comfortable in a chilly office." Using an AI that costs about ~$20 a month (varies by tax/plan as of June 2026) feels like having a skilled copywriter assistant draft your text for you.
My Personal Rule: AI Drafts, Human Verifies
While AI is a powerful tool for generating text, there is a personal rule I always follow.
"AI drafts, Human verifies."
Along with this, I follow another strict rule: "Never input personal or confidential information into the AI." I make sure to anonymize data, check the AI's data-use settings, and confirm my own company's privacy policy before using it.
When it comes to product descriptions, there is an additional light note I keep in mind: we must keep our claims truthful. We should never make exaggerated or false product claims. I never blindly use the generated copy. A human always verifies that the text accurately reflects the product and does not overpromise.
AI does not replace your staff. It is simply a support tool to reduce the stress of staring at a blank page. Compared to agonizing for a long time over what to write, spending a few minutes tweaking a draft is infinitely less stressful.
Let AI handle the initial heavy lifting of writing appealing copy. Use your saved time and energy to focus on customer service and sourcing great products. I believe this is the smartest way for a retail or e-commerce business to use AI.
